Bone cancer is the cancer having its origin in the bones. As compared to metastatic or secondary cancer (cancer that having its origin in another organ but it spreads to the bone tissues) it is relatively uncommon.
Causes: The main factors that cause bone cancer are not clearly identified yet, but there are certain possible factors that have been identified. One of them is a female hormone ‘Estrogen’, a hormone that plays an important role in the development of cancer. A women who is having her menstrual period for the first time at very small age (before 11) or having its menopause in a very late age, are more prone for developing bone cancer because they remain exposed to estrogen for a longer period of time in her life.
Symptoms: Swelling, tenderness or pain in affected area are the common symptoms of bone cancer. Along with this, lump formation can also occur in affected area. But none of these symptoms can considered as a prominent signs of bone cancer.
Treatments: Bone cancer (metastatic cancer) treatment has two phases: Managing neoplasm and managing symptoms produced by local lesion.
There are mainly two methods for treating bone cancer:
1. Systematic therapy: It is mainly aimed for treating those cancer cell which spread throughout the body. Hormone therapy, Chemotherapy and Immunotherapy comes under systematic therapy
2. Local therapy: It is mainly for destroy or killing cancerous cells of particular area. Surgery and Radiation therapy comes under local therapy.
